CHRISTMAS EVE/DAY
WHO IS JESUS - On this day when
we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ among us, it is important to remember
both who he is and why he came. From the Large Catechism, Part 2, Article
2:
27] If now you are asked, What do you
believe in the Second Article of Jesus Christ? answer briefly: I believe
that Jesus Christ, true Son of God, has become my Lord. But what is it
to become Lord? It is this, that He has redeemed me from sin, from the
devil, from death, and all evil. For before I had no Lord nor King, but
was captive under the power of the devil, condemned to death, enmeshed
in sin and blindness.
28] For when we had been created by
God the Father, and had received from Him all manner of good, the devil
came and led us into disobedience, sin, death, and all evil, so that we
fell under His wrath and displeasure and were doomed to eternal damnation,
as we had merited and deserved. 29] There was no counsel, help, or comfort
until this only and eternal Son of God in His unfathomable goodness had
compassion upon our misery and wretchedness, and came from heaven to help
us. 30] Those tyrants and jailers, then, are all expelled now, and in
their place has come Jesus Christ, Lord of life, righteousness, every
blessing, and salvation, and has delivered us poor lost men from the jaws
of hell, has won us, made us free, and brought us again into the favor
and grace of the Father, and has taken us as His own property under His
shelter and protection, that He may govern us by His righteousness, wisdom,
power, life, and blessedness.

CHRISTMAS I
Apology,
Chapter XIII., 281 sqq.
3] If we call Sacraments rites which
have the command of God, and to which the promise of grace has been added,
it is easy to decide what are properly Sacraments. For rites instituted
by men will not in this way be Sacraments properly so called. For it does
not belong to human authority to promise grace. Therefore signs instituted
without God's command are not sure signs of grace, even though they perhaps
instruct the rude [children or the uncultivated], or admonish as to something
[as a painted cross]. 4] Therefore Baptism, the Lord's Supper, and Absolution,
which is the Sacrament of Repentance, are truly Sacraments. For these
rites have God's command and the promise of grace, which is peculiar to
the New Testament. For when we are baptized, when we eat the Lord's body,
when we are absolved, our hearts must be firmly assured that God truly
forgives us 5] for Christ's sake. And God, at the same time, by the Word
and by the rite, moves hearts to believe and conceive faith, just as Paul
says, Rom. 10, 17: Faith cometh by hearing. But just as the Word enters
the ear in order to strike our heart, so the rite itself strikes the eye,
in order to move the heart. The effect of the Word and of the rite is
the same, as it has been well said by Augustine that a Sacrament is a
visible word, because the rite is received by the eyes, and is, as it
were, a picture of the Word, signifying the same thing as the Word. Therefore
the effect of both is the same.
CIRCUMCISION OF CHRIST
Augusburg
Confession, Art. III., 38.
Article III: Of the Son of God.
1] Also they teach that the Word, that is, the Son of God, did assume
the human nature in 2] the womb of the blessed Virgin Mary, so that there
are two natures, the divine and the human, inseparably enjoined in one
Person, one Christ, true God and true man, who was born of the Virgin
Mary, truly suffered, was crucified, dead, and 3] buried, that He might
reconcile the Father unto us, and be a sacrifice, not only for original
guilt, but also for all actual sins of men.
4] He also descended into hell, and truly rose again the third day; afterward
He ascended into heaven that He might sit on the right hand of the Father,
and forever reign and have dominion over all creatures, and sanctify 5]
them that believe in Him, by sending the Holy Ghost into their hearts,
to rule, comfort, and quicken them, and to defend them against the devil
and the power of sin.
6] The same Christ shall openly come again to judge the quick and the
dead, etc., according to the Apostles' Creed.
